FTP Site Usage Instructions and GuideLines
Last updated: September 8,
2004
midimag.org has an FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
site.
This site is used to exchange music, product demos, interesting articles
(some written by our members!), and more.
To access the site, you will first need an FTP program,
such as WSFTP, FTP Explorer, or something else. Some web browsers can
serve as FTP browsers (you can not use them to upload, however, only to
view and download).
If you are using a standard FTP program, you can direct it to open the
site:
ftp.midimag.org
Login as "anonymous", and enter your email address as the password.
If you are using a web browser, you should be able to simply go to the
following URL:
ftp://ftp.midimag.org
No matter which method you choose above, you should be
able to see a directory listing (if you are using a unix FTP program,
type "ls"). The following is what you should see:
- articles/
- documentation/
- music/
- product_demos/
- scripts/
- soft_synths/
- software/
- soundfonts/
Each of these directories, contains files of the nature suggested by
their name. Each directory also contains a directory called "incoming".
This directory, exists so that you can upload files that are related to
the directory's purpose. For example, if you have some sound font files
you want to upload, you would change into the directory
"soundfonts/incoming/", and upload your file(s) (see below).
Uploading Files
If you have files you want to upload, please observ the following
guidelines. Failure to do so, may end up with your files being deleted
before anyone can download them, so read carefully!
- You must! upload a text file with your files, which gives the
following information:
- Your name.
- Your email address.
- The name of the file(s) you have uploaded.
- A description of what the file(s) contain.
If you upload a file called, "my music.mp3", you should upload a text
file called, "my music.txt".
- Text files you upload, should be plain (so-called "DOS Text") text
files, not RTF, PDF, doc, HTML, or any other inhansed format.
- Do not upload files, to an incoming directory that does not relate
to the topic of your files. For example, don't upload an article to the
music/incoming subdirectory. It will probably get lost.
- Please try to avoid uploading particularly offensive material.
- Be aware, that anything you upload, for now, anyway, can be
downloaded by *anyone* on the internet.
- If you want a file removed, contact the webmaster.
If you think anything should be added to this page, or
if you have any other suggestions, please contact the webmaster.
